The following are common types of sedation dentistry that are used in our office:
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS ?
Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements used to replace a missing tooth or teeth, helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. The dental implant procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry, though it also is a form of cosmetic surgery. By replacing missing tooth roots, implants offer more than an esthetic enhancement, providing people with the strength and durability required to eat all the foods they love, without struggling to chew. Although you have a number of restorative options for the treatment of missing teeth, none have proven to be as functionally effective and durable as implants. In many cases, dental implants may be the only logical choice for the restoration of all necessary functionality of the teeth and supporting structures.
SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANTS
If you have lost a single tooth due to an accident or from periodontal disease, that one tooth can be easily replaced using a dental implant. Your new tooth will look and function just like your other natural teeth.
Patients who need to replace a full upper and/or lower set of teeth can now receive all-on-four implants. An oral surgeon will place 4 implants and then attach a full arch of teeth, giving the procedure its name.
Occasionally a patient is missing more than one tooth, but still has healthy gums and surrounding teeth, and a multiple implant is the best solution. Two fixtures are implanted and the crown is attached, leaving other natural teeth intact. The multiple implant is not for everyone, and even if a patient is only missing a few teeth, it may be still be preferable to perform an all-on-four procedure.
One of the more common types of sedation that is requested in our office is the use of nitrous oxide. This is also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide helps to put patients into a state of euphoria. While in this state, you may still feel the work that is being completed, but it won’t hurt and you will be able to easily respond to the dentist.
Oral Sedation Dentistry
If you do not want to be put to sleep entirely, then you may wish to use oral conscious sedation. There are oral medications that can be taken before your procedure, to help you relax before receiving treatment. While in a semi-conscious sedated state, you will be able to communicate with the dentist, while still feeling at ease.
Oral sedation has many different states. If you don’t want to be aware of what is happening during your dental procedure, and you just want to wake up after it is finished, then sleep sedation dentistry might be just what you are looking for. When this type of sedation is used, you will need a friend or family member to accompany you. There is little after care involved, and you will need to be observed for around 6 hours after the procedure to ensure that there are no complications from the sedation. While IV sedation is the most common form of sleep sedation, other approaches are used as well.
